The Voice of the Octagon is a San Francisco-Based duo featuring Katja on sax and Ted on bass, in addition to both of us improvising on a pair of MIDI-synchronized laptops, and one Prophet 600 from the dark ages of MIDI. We make jazz from the future by mining the jazz of the past.
The music is completely unplanned and a performance can go in just about any direction. We are both big fans of classic jazz, as well as being jazz musicians ourselves, and our sound starts with research. Hours are spent listening to classic jazz recordings looking for parts of songs we might want to incorporate into our performance. We each have a laptop (MIDI synch’ed to each other of course) and there are live instruments as well. This allows us a spontaneity and flexibility missing from a more traditional jazz lineup, as well as from more typical DJing and electronic performance. We feel it’s the perfect melding of the two worlds. What you hear is completely live and unrehearsed, with no editing after the fact.
